Ondernemers in

Hiervoor is jouw
hulp nodig! Ben jij een ondernemer in de Nederlandse danssector die graag
een bijdrage wil leveren aan dit onderzoek? Vul dan de enquête in met
behulp van de volgende link:
(Enquête is gesloten.

Grote dank!

For the incredible women in my life

Today is the international day honoring the women. I would like to dedicate this day to a few of the many wonderful strong, delicate, smart en true women I know. I guess me posting this blog, after so much time not posting anything, is also due to recent events. A strong woman has passed on this week and she is the first I would like to dedicate this year’s international women’s day.

Ria is actually my former mother-in-law and thought my relationship with her son was no succes, it have provided me with a wonderful second family that I love. She was one of the strongest women I know. She was the pilar that supported her family, always there for her kids and husband, never judging. She didn’t need to say much, one of her looks said a thousand words. Ria, I’ll love you always!

Now, you might be wondering if she was the pilar, how’s the family standing? This brings me to her beautiful daughter, my little sisters that I love so much. Raqie is this strong young woman of 25 that has taken on a load of the things her mother did. When she should be crying, she was managing the family, the house and emotions. There was a moment that I looked at her and just thought “wow!”. And Amparo, only 14 and already so grown up. I cannot grasp what she must be going through, but her strength inspires me. And their mother lives on through them. They both have “the look” and inner strength their mother had. I love them so much!

My mom cannot be missing in this blog. I am who I am because of her. And even thought our relationship has it’s rocky periodes, whenever I need her, she’s there. No questions asked, no demands. She handled my 16-year-old-self, that alone deserves a medal of something! And when my mom wants something, she gets it. I think ‘The Secret’ was based on her.

And last but not least, my grandmas Zilda and Idésia. My grandma Zilda is one of my best friends, and since she has as iphone we get to whatsapp and facetime all the time. That alone makes her extraordinary. She also goes to the gym six days a week, she would go a 7th day, but it is closed then. The last time she came to visit in us in Holland, she only stayed for 1,5 week because she had to go back to go on a trip with her friend to Turkey and Egypt. She’s a true globe trotter and my role model. My grandma Idésia raised 8 kids on her own in Brazil as a creole woman. My grandfather would pop in every two years or so and get her pregnant. She is turning 93 this year and keeps on going, even though her memory fails her. Her children all went to school and have built up comfortable lives for themselves. My grandmas are pretty cool old ladies!

To them, I dedicate this song by Erasmo Carlos – Mulher.

I can’t resist, but this also goed to my beautiful sister Nash, my good-step-mom Rose, my baby sister Lídia, my heart Bracha, my love Ladan, Cher, Mirella, Vanessa, Cleo, my cousins, my friends and to you, women!

10tacle Dance Studios is through to the finals!

As I’ve told in a previous blog, I have, together with a friend, entered a contest here in Rotterdam for young entrepreneurs, The Enterprize. We sent in our business idea and got selected for the first round, and now the jury has also put us through to the finals. Happy times!

Our idea? Dance studios in the center of Rotterdam. A space with around 7 different studio’s of different sizes for rent. With flexible workspace for teachers to work on their administration and a place were you can get a quick and deliciously healthy bite before and after dancing. It will be an independent platform for different styles, teachers, groups and schools. Stimulating interaction between them all, through the studio’s and through the website, to get dance to a further level in Rotterdam and The Netherlands.

But most of all, to provide the space needed for people to enjoy their passion for dancing. And as Nietzsche said “I would believe only in a God that knows how to dance.” This is bigger then us!

There are two prizes we can win, the jury prize and the public prize. You can help us get the public prize with only two clicks!

The first on this link, the second on the yellow button beneath the video. No e-mail or registration required. You can cast one vote per ip-address. Please vote!

Themater theme night: Does the youth have (the) future?

Blog in Dutch–> here

Last Wednesday, November 3rd, I was invited to, in 20 minutes, share my vision on the question stated above. “Does the youth have (the) future?”
It was a interesting evening in which more and again I realize that there’s much work to be done. I’ll blog about this another time.

The audience and guests of the evening had a few requests, like the presentation the I used. Do note that the presentation is in Dutch. I’m translating it to English soon enough. So, here it goes!

Dear Themater guests,

Just bellow this text you’ll find my presentation, as promised. Please note that this presentation is a work in progress. I actually believe it will never be finished. So, I’ll keep changing and adding to it.

Furthermore, you can click here to find my favorite TEDtalks and here for the website of all TEDtalks.

…reasons why I write in English

All my posts, with an occasional exception, will be in English. And I have my reasons for that. The top 5 reasons are:

  1. So that, most of, my family and friends in Brazil can understand. Keep them updated and share things with them
  2. The same goes for my family and friends in Holland
  3. Living in in Holland, and specially in Rotterdam, is like making a trip around the world every day. Wonderful! So, I meet a lot of people from all over the world. And until we have found the babelfish, English is the most universal language to communicate in.
  4. Stray cybernauts (no, not the David Bowie cover-band), bored house-moms, horny old men, skimmers and school kids on their iPhones. They are all people and I would like to share my thoughts with them too.
  5. Last, but not least. For those who are alienated from the world and can’t understand English, there’s always Google translate. It’s a great gadget, but the translations are sometimes not quite right (SO wrong). The safest is to translate from the English to any other language. You can even copy the URL (address) from a website and post it to translate. Google (The Almighty) will then translate the whole website for you. Great, right?!

Abraços, —>that’s ‘hugs’ in Portuguese. Yeah, it’s not English. So?

To dance is to live!

Sanne, a dear friend who I met through dance, and I have signed ourselves up for The Enterprize 2010. This is a contest here in Rotterdam for young entrepreneurs. We sent in our business idea and got selected for the first round!

Our idea? Dance studios in the center Rotterdam. A space with around 7 different studio’s of different sizes for rent.
There are many schools, teachers and groups, but not much space that’s right for practicing dance. And as Nietzsche said “I would believe only in a God that knows how to dance.”

Next round is the finals and you can help us get there with just two clicks of your mouse. The first on the link bellow, the second on the yellow button beneath the video. Please vote!
